Ex-vice governor of Jilin sentenced to life for taking 19m yuan bribes
A former vice governor of northeastern Jilin Province was sentenced to life imprisonment today by a Beijing court for taking bribes of 19.19 million yuan (US$3.14 million).
The Beijing No.1 Intermediate People’s Court announced the verdict this morning.
Tian Xueren, 66, former executive deputy governor of Jilin and Party chief, had pleaded guilty to taking the bribes in a previous hearing held by the Beijing No.1 Intermediate People’s Court.
Prosecutors said he used his position to help 10 people with businesses, career promotions and school places.
Wth Tian’s help, five people gained promotions, including the provincial deputy police chief and the city’s chief prosecutor, Beijing News reported.
Tian received bribes, ranging from 5,000 yuan to 1 million yuan, at his home or office in provincial capital Changchun, reports said.
