Ex-wife 'was loaned embezzled funds'
PROSECUTORS claim the ex-husband of Hu Jie, who is now wife of Shanghai stand-up comedian Zhou Libo, lent more than 33 million yuan (US$5.2 million) of embezzled money to Hu's company.
Hu has denied her wealth was connected to her ex husband's illegally acquired assets.
The case attracted attention because Hu's current husband is a well-known comedian and a judge on the popular "China's Got Talent" television show.
Hu, a native of Wenzhou City in Zhejiang Province, divorced Yang Shenghua, a former driver and henchman of crooked Wenzhou government official Yang Xiuzhu, in May last year, Qianjiang Evening News reported yesterday.
Lucheng District People's Procuratorate allege Yang Shenghua embezzled more than 73 million yuan from 1999 to 2003 and lent more than 33 million yuan to Jieling Stainless Steel Production, whose former chairman is Hu.
The registered assets of Jieling rocketed from 500,000 yuan in 1996, the year it was established, to 26.66 million yuan in 2000, during which time Yang was alleged to have committed the crimes, the report said.
But Hu dismissed rumors of a connection on several occasions, saying: "The wise man knows he knows nothing, the fool thinks he knows all." She said legal authorities would prove her innocence, according to the report.
Yang Shenghua is awaiting trial, according to the report.
The driver, 49, is alleged to have privatized state enterprises by forging documents, the report said.
