Eyewitness of macabre death to take lie detector test
POLICE in Wenzhou, a city in Zhejiang Province, said they will conduct a polygraph test on a key witness as they investigate the controversial death of a village head.
The witness, Qian Chengyu, told several villagers he saw four masked men in black holding Qian Yunhui, 53, head of Yueqing Village, down to the ground on a road last Saturday morning, China Radio reported today.
Qian Chengyu, in his 40s, told the villagers that he was pulled away by two of the four men when trying to stop them. When he looked back, he saw a red truck running over Qian Yunhui slowly, the radio quoted the villagers as saying.
What Qian Chengyu said conflicted with the police statement that Qian Yunhui's death was nothing but a common traffic accident.
Wenzhou police told China Radio that Qian Chengyu was detained on Sunday for allegedly possessing drugs and beating police officers. They said Qian merely saw what he called "safety guards" standing at the spot, instead of witnessing the death. Police didn't say when Qian Chengyu will be released.
Another villager, using a pseudonym Li Xinhua, told China Youth Daily yesterday that she was also at the scene and four men wearing white gloves and black masks locked the hands and neck of Qian Yunhui, forcing him to lie on the path. One man waved his hand, and a red truck ran towards Qian Yunhui. Li was chased away by the men, the newspaper reported today.
Wenzhou police said they will verify the claims because evidences collected so far didn't hint a foul play was involved in the village leader's death.
