Face-gnawing attack due to alcohol, doctor thinks
A DOCTOR said the man who gnawed on a female driver's face in Wenzhou City of eastern China's Zhejiang Province was likely suffering from complicated intoxication syndrome, which made him lose control, local media reported.
Police said on Monday that they have arrested the attacker, surnamed Dong, on charges of assault, Wenzhou Business Daily reported yesterday.
Police told the newspaper that Dong was in coma for seven hours after he was caught on June 29 after blocking a woman's car on the road, climbing onto the hood and then gnawing on her face.
After he woke up, Dong told police he could not remember anything about the assault, the newspaper said. He remembered only drinking heavily with his friends at lunch.
"Drug addicts would always feel that danger was nearby after taking drugs. But Dong's urine test results showed that he didn't take any drugs before the assault," a police officer told the newspaper.
Guo Hanfeng, director of the mental health department of a Wenzhou hospital, told the newspaper that Dong was likely suffering from complicated intoxication syndrome.
Relatives of the victim, surnamed Du, said she has had surgery to repair her lips and nose but has to undergo another plastic surgery.
Doctors said even after the two surgeries, Du's right face is likely to be deformed.
Relatives said the woman was traumatized, refusing to see anyone and hiding at home.
Her family is now negotiating with Dong for compensation.
