Facing soaring prices, man builds his own home

A MAN in Zhengzhou City, central China Henan Province, has figured out his own way to counter the country's rocketing housing price -- building a home underground.

The 64-year-old Chen Xinnian, who used to be a mine worker, started putting his expertise into use four years ago to build his dream home for his family to live in.

He has now finished building a 50-square-meter basement, six meters down under the ground of his yard in Zhengzhou, reported local Dahe Newspaper today.

After moving in the furniture and home appliances, the family has spent the summer at the new home with satisfaction.

Chen said he came up with the idea after his daughter told him she had a boyfriend, which brought a mixture of joy and worry to the family.

Their original house was too small and shabby. So his poor housing condition could hamper the daughter's marriage if his daughter was going to live with them after marrying her boyfriend, said Chen. Buying a new apartment was out of question as one square meter costs nearly 5,000 yuan (US$ 729.21) in Zhengzhou, far beyond the means of Chen who only earns a low income.
