Factory closed for storing food with disinfectant

A factory that used an industrial chemical to keep pig blood curd fresh was raided yesterday by the industrial and commercial watchdog in Chongqing, southwest China.

Several tons of pig blood curd, a popular food in China, were stored in cement pits and immersed in formalin, a solution of formaldehyde, said officials from the Chongqing Administration for Industry and Commerce.

"Test showed the amount of formaldehyde per kilo of the blood curd was 100 milligrams more than the legal limit," one official said.

The bureau has ordered the factory to halt production immediately and sealed the site, China News Service reported today.

A worker at the factory said they bought pig blood from a local slaughterhouse, added salt and water to congeal the blood and soaked them in formalin to keep fresh.

Formalin, which is used to preserve corpse, can damage kidney, liver and nervous system and even cause cancer.

The factory didn't have any license and mainly sold blood curd to the local market.

Blood curb boiled in chilli sauce is a traditional delicacy in Chongqing.
