Factory flouts lead poisoning scandal

A COUNTY government in central China has failed to shut polluting factories and detained villagers who tried to take medical tests after 250 children were found to have lead poisoning.

The county is already very poor and can't afford to lose the factories, Lei Xiangdong, the head of the environmental protection authority in Jiahe County, Henan Province, told Beijing News today.

The lead factory accused of the mass poisoning is still open despite requests to shut down by the environmental authority, Lei said.

A villager named Cao Xiaoying said her four children all had lead poisoning and her husband Liao Mingxiu was detained by police five months ago for interrupting public order.

Last September, a bus carrying 53 villagers was stopped by government officials and police officers. Three people, including Cao's husband, were detained because officials feared they would report the poisoning to higher authorities.

The Jiahe government said according to their medical tests, 250 children among the total of 397 in three villages were suffering from lead poisoning.

The factory was closed for a short while in 2009 after the scandal broke out, but it is back in production again.
