Factory gas leak forces thousands to evacuate

A hydrogen chloride leak from a chemical factory in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province made many nearby residents sick yesterday morning and tens of thousands of them fled their homes in panic, China News Service reported today.

The factory, located in the second phase of an industrial park known as "Chinese Capital of Shoes," west of the city, began to emit a pungent smell around 9pm on Monday and some people started to feel dizzy and nausea, the report said.

Firemen were called in immediately and they located the source of leakage at 2:30am yesterday. It was a broke feeding pipe on a furnace that caused hydrogen chloride to escape into the air. They acted promptly to turn off the gas supply to stem leaking.

As a precaution, local authorities evacuated people from the vicinity of the factory yesterday afternoon and encouraged them to go home after warning was lifted.

Experts said breathing too much hydrogen chloride may lead to swollen throat and upper respiratory tract infection.
