Factory gas leak sickens residents in Zhenjiang
SIXTY-EIGHT people were sent to the hospital this morning after poisonous gas leaked from a chemical plant in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province.
The leaking of sulfur dioxide from the plant of Jiangsu Sopo Group Co Ltd was detected around 10am when several residents in Jianbi Town smelt a strong odor and felt hard to breathe.
The local Yangtze Evening News said on its official microblog that preliminary investigation showed the incident was triggered by "abnormal discharge" of sulfur dioxide.
Environmental officials have rushed to the area to deal with the case, the online report said.
