Factory spill makes river milky and oily
A river in Wenzhou, eastern Zhejiang Province, turned milky and oily after hundreds of kilograms of natural emulsion spilled from an upstream factory.
A 2-kilometer section of the Quxi River is so polluted that local villagers are afraid to use its water to wash clothes, the Wenzhou City News reported today.
Dai Dongpeng, an environmental protection official in Ouhai District, said the spill was caused by a broken pipe belonging to the Dashulin Trading Co Ltd, but the natural substance is not poisonous.
Dai said local authorities are now pumping the polluted water into a sewage treatment plant and the factory of Dashulin Trading Company has been shut down for investigation and punishment, the paper said.
A Dashulin manager surnamed Zhang told the paper that nearly 200 kilograms of the natural emulsion had leaked into the river last weekend before they discovered the broken pipe but they didn't clean it up because it was not toxic.
