Factory to move after leak poisons 26

A CHEMICAL factory will be moved away from a residential area in central China's Hubei Province after a chemical gas leak poisoned 26 residents, including nine children and a three-month-old baby.

The factory will be moved to an industrial park in Jinzhou's neighboring Shashi City when the paperwork is ready, Jinzhou environment officials told Cnhubei.com today.

The latest chlorine leak occurred on Sunday at Sancaitang Chemical Technology Co Ltd, which is meters away from nearly 10,000 residents in Jinzhou City, according to the Website report.

The residents didn't realize they were poisoned until a day later when they developed breathing difficulties and coughs.

Twenty-six people, including 10 aged under 12, were hospitalized at Jinzhou No.3 People's Hospital. Most are in a stable condition, doctors said.

Investigation by the local environmental authority indicated that an overflow in a tank had led to the leak of a chemical mixture containing chlorine.

Sancaitang has covered all the medical expenses for the victims and is arranging free medical examination for other residents.

Chlorine is poisonous and widely used in medicine and fertilitzer, according to Professor Yin Xianqing with Changjiang University's Chemistry Department.
