Fake blood curd investigated
A WELL-KNOWN Beijing food company is investigating some of its franchise stores accused of buying fake duck blood curd and selling it for as much as five times its cost.
The Beijing Daoxiangcun Foodstuff Co Ltd said it never produced duck blood curd and never allowed its franchise stores to sell it, not to mention a fake made from pig blood with harmful additives.
Blood curd is a delicacy in Chinese cuisine. Chicken and duck blood, costlier than pig blood, is often cooked in soup.
Beijing News reported that two major meat processors, Beijing No. 5 Meat Processing Factory and Beijng Zhongrui Foodstuff Co Ltd, subcontracted franchise stores and turned a blind eye to illegal practices.
A man surnamed Li who made the blood curd inside the Zhongrui plant said he could make nearly 150 kilograms of fake duck blood curd a day. In his 30-square-meter workplace, pieces of blood curd were piled in a big iron container as wastewater covered the ground.
He said he also offered the fake duck blood curd to local supermarkets and restaurants. "Most of the duck blood curd on sale is made from pig blood. You can hardly tell them apart."
Several Daoxiangcun franchises, including the ones in the Huilongguan area and at Beijing Normal University, sold fake duck blood curd and lied that the curd was fresh although it had been stored for 15 hours and emitted a bad smell, the news report stated.
Li Xingmin of the China Agricultural University, said fake duck blood made from poor-quality pig blood might be mixed with formaldehyde and industrial pigment, harmful to the liver and kidneys.
