Fake gun, imposters found in reporter attack case

THE gun used by a local official in central China's Henan Province to warn journalists from reporting an illegal construction project turned out to be a match-grade air pistol, local media reported today.

Two of the five alleged journalists who were beaten and threatened by the official were impostors, said a report on dahe.cn.

Niu Hao, the 28-year-old deputy director of a district housing bureau in Luohe City, has been detained with three other suspects on charges of illegal detention.

Niu's air pistol is a model used in shooting competitions and is forbidden by the law to be held in private possession.

Last month Nie and other suspects attacked Yuan Yuqing and two self-claimed journalists Guo Cungen and Zhou Dazeng for investigating an illegal construction project.

Guo said he was a reporter from a news website but the website denied it has an employee under that name. Yuan was also found lying about his profession. Only Zhou Dazeng is the real reporter, Luohe officials said.

Guo and Zhou each received 25,000 yuan (US$3,965) in compensation from Niu.

Authorities have stopped the illegal construction and will tear it down. Official investigation is continuing to find Nie's relationship with the unqualified real estate company, the report said.
