Fake passport official detained
A FORMER high-ranking official in Zhejiang Province has been detained trying to escape from China with a fake passport.
Zhu Bing, the former Standing Committee member of the Communist Party of Yongkang Committee and secretary of the Politics and Law Committee of the city, was taken into custody by the Jinhua People's Procuratorate yesterday, Xinhua News Agency reported today.
Zhu was sacked from the Communist Party and removed from his posts on Tuesday.
Zhu had applied to visit his daughter who is studying in the United States last December, but this application was rejected because of his close connections with Ding Qingping, the chairman of Zhejiang China and Hong Kong Group. Ding fled abroad last September after being involved in a scandal involving the illegal removal of billions of yuan in deposits.
Zhu then asked Cheng Wailiang, the deputy general manager of Lange Chemical Co Ltd, to find a man similar to him in age, height and appearance. Cheng found a worker in his company, one Xia Liurong from Geyang County in Jiangxi Province.
Zhu went to the Geyang County Public Security Bureau with Cheng and Xia on February 24 and applied for a passport using his own photograph but Xia's identification papers, saying he wanted to travel to Malaysia and Singapore.
His passport application was accepted and he applied for an entry permit to Hong Kong and on February 26 and one to Macau on March 2. He was caught by the Exit-Entry Administration Department of the Shangrao Public Security Bureau in Jiangxi.
Zhu was involved in taking bribes and gambling. He got money from relatives and friends and lent this to Ding at high interest rates and offered debt guarantees for Ding.
