Families compensated in tainted milk scandal

MORE than 3,000 victim families in the country's tainted milk scandal have been compensated in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province.

A total of 3,115 families received a combined 6.44 million yuan (US$940,936) in compensation, according to the Lanzhou Industrial & Commercial Bureau, Lanzhou Morning Post reported today.

Six families refused compensation in order to file a lawsuit.

Another 574 families haven't been compensated due to inaccurate or incomplete information. They can still seek compensation when they produce proper documents in the future, the report said.

In an open letter published in December last year, now-bankrupt Sanlu and 21 other dairy companies offered 200,000 yuan each to families whose children died and 30,000 yuan for serious illnesses such as kidney stones and acute kidney failure. They also offered 2,000 yuan to victims in less severe cases.

As of January 22, families of the 262,662 children nationwide who were affected after drinking melamine-contaminated milk products had signed compensation agreements with the companies involved, the China Dairy Industry Association said on January 23, without saying how much the compensation amounted to.

The Ministry of Health has put the number of infants who died after drinking melamine contaminated milk products at six nationwide. Another 296,000 infants suffered kidney stones and other urinary problems.
