Families of drowned children sign compensation deal
FAMILIES of the five drowned children have signed an compensation agreement with the contractor of a fish pond, where the bodies were found.
The contractor promised to pay a total of 480,000 yuan (US$70,311) in compensation to the two families, according to the deal, government of Tiantai County of Zhejiang Province said today.
The victims' fathers were brothers.
Investigations showed the drowning had been an accident, but the sturgeon company was found partly responsible for the tragedy due to inadequate management.
The contractor of the 2.4-meter deep sturgeon pond failed to cordon off the paths leading to the area, allowing free entrance, said Wang Xiejiao, political commissar of the public security bureau of Tiantai.
Villagers also claimed that there is no warning sign around the pond to remind people of dangers.
The five victims, three girls and two boys, aged 7 to 13. Their bodies were retrieved Tuesday in the pond of Sanhe Sturgeon Development Co., about 500 meters away from their homes.
They were reported missing on Feb. 18, sparking anxiety and suspicion among villagers.
Traces of people slipping into the water and trying to rescue each other were found on the slope at the northwestern corner of the pond.
No "mechanical injuries" caused by strangling or other external forces were found on the bodies. Neither toxins nor other clues or evidences of murdering were found, police investigations had confirmed.
