Families to be given videos of inmates
POLICE in northwest China plan to show jail security videos to the families of inmates, in line with a campaign to combat the abuse of prisoners.
Police in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region will adopt a trial of releasing videos from detention houses and prisons in the region's Tongxin County, the Beijing Times reported yesterday.
Police will expand the coverage to all detention houses and jails in the region by the end of this year, Gao Hongning, vice director of Ningxia police, said.
The videos will show families the cells of criminal suspects in detention houses who, according to the law, are not allowed to meet their families, Feng Binzhong, vice director of Tongxin police, said.
Police throughout the country have been ordered to join a three-month campaign to combat the abuse of prisoners, the Ministry of Public Security said, following a series of accusations over suspicious deaths in custody.
