Family accuse nurse after boy dies
THE parents of a two-year-old boy who died after being put on a drip in a hospital in south China have accused a nurse of administering the wrong medication.
The boy, identified as Xiao Xiang, was treated for a lung infection in a hospital in Wanning City, Hainan Province, on Wednesday.
After he was put on an intravenous drip he started crying, his lips turned black and his stomach swelled. He died two hours later, Hainan's news web portal, Hinews.cn, reported yesterday.
Xiao Xiang's family found another person's name tag on the drip bottle and questioned the qualifications of the nurse who administered it, as it took her 10 minutes to find the vein for the injection.
The family gathered at the hospital on Thursday, demanding an explanation. During the demonstration, furious relatives smashed some medical equipment, and police had to restore order.
No hospital leaders came to meet the family.
The hospital said the boy was only given glucose and that the bottle had been returned by another patient for refund. The nurse had forgotten to remove the name tag, officials said.
Wanning City Health Bureau has started an investigation into the incident.
