Family attacked by masked mob for refusing to move

MASKED men wielding knives, iron rods and axes attacked a family of seven in a village in Sanhe City, Hebei Province last week and the attack was believed to be directed by a local demolition office to force them to relocate.

The incident occurred early on March 22. About 20 masked men broke into Liu Guofeng's house and hacked his family members.

The attack lasted four minutes before neighbors came to the family's help. Liu was slashed in his arm, ear and lips while his cousins Liu Guohua and Liu Wei suffered wounds in their heads and limbs.

All are in stable condition except Liu Wei who is still listed in critical condition. Local authorities have covered the family's medical costs, the Beijing Times reported today.

Villagers believed it was the local demolition office that directed the attack because many of them had also been threatened to move.

Police have detained 12 people involved in the attack but didn't confirm the speculations as investigation is still ongoing, the paper said.
