Family blame boy's death on expired drugs used in hospital
A hospital in Guangzhou, the capital of south China's Guangdong Province was accused of using expired medicines to treat a two-year-old patient and causing his death.
The boy, Hong Huanran, got the cold two days ago and was admitted to the Guangzhou Red Cross Hospital at 2:30pm on Wednesday. He ran a fever of 41 degrees Celsius and was diagnosed of a nerve infection.
However, subsequent treatment produced no effect and two hours later the boy fell into a coma. The doctors then performed emergency operation on the toddler but were unable to save his life. Hong was announced dead at 6:55pm, the local Nanfang Daily reported today.
The outraged parents argued that the two medicines used in the emergency treatment were expired in June 2010 and December 2011 respectively, but the hospital ignored their claim and even changed the valid date on one of them.
Around 10 relatives of the boy held a banner in front of the hospital yesterday afternoon, demanding an explanation for its violation of medical procedures, the report said.
But the hospital denied the allegations and said all of the drugs had been sealed for investigation. It also suggested a post-mortem to find the real cause of the boy's death.
