Family demands justice after man dies in detention
RELATIVES of a man who died three days after he was detained in a central city for alleged robbery urged prosecutors to file a lawsuit against police on suspicion of torturing the suspect to death.
Yu Gangfeng suffered diarrhea and kept vomiting, and suddenly collapsed to the floor with foam coming from his mouth in the early morning of October 26 last year, said police in Xiangcheng, city of Henan Province.
The autopsy report showed he died of respiratory failure triggered by pulmonary embolism, according to the police.
But Yu's relatives remained suspicion over his sudden illness after they found he suffered four broken ribs and had bruises on his body.
Police insisted that Yu suffered fractures during a medical exam, but both doctors and police refused to show the postmortem report to prove their words, People's Daily's website reported today.
Xiangcheng prosecutors said the current evidence does not prove torturing during interrogation and police said no violations have been found in the process, the report said.
