Family doubts police's self-strangulation story
THE family of a man who police said strangled himself to death is questioning the explanation, saying he was under the supervision of four government employees at the time in Hebei Province.
Wang Bing, a villager of Chunguang Town in Hebei's Zhangjiakou City, was found dead on March 8 with a shoelace tied around his neck and attached to a door lock in a hostel room, his parents were told by the local police.
His parents told yesterday's China Youth Daily they left him at the hostel so they could go to Beijing to lodge a complaint against the local government for allegedly bulldozing their home.
Wang's home was pulled down on September 29, 2008, when his parents were out shopping.
The homeless family then started lodging complaints to the superior governments but all in vain.
The family said the local government finally arranged for them to live in the hostel.
In February, Wang's parents went to Beijing to lodge their complaint.
After they came back, they said the government sent four employees to man the room next to theirs to "care" for them.
But the family simply described the "care" as 24-hour monitoring. They said they got no privacy even at nights as their door lock was broken.
On March 8, Wang stumbled in the toilet and hurt his already fractured leg. But the family said the "care" just smiled.
Wang's parents decided to visit Beijing again, leaving Wang alone at the hostel.
But days later, they were told their son had committed suicide by strangling himself.
They demanded the local police and government show them the forensic report but were refused. The Xuanwu police told the newspaper that it is not the police's obligation to disclose such reports.
Yang Lei, the Party secretary of Chunguang Town, declined to comment on the incident.
