Family gets compensation after police accidently shoot bystander dead
THE family of a man who was accidentally shot dead by police has received compensation from the government, local police said today.
The government of Fengshan County, in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, paid 580,000 yuan (US$84,954) in compensation to the family of the victim, Luo Qimin, on Sunday, said Qin Yongjun, a spokesman with Guangxi's Public Security Bureau.
The accident happened early Saturday morning when three Fengshan County policemen were trying to control more than 10 disorderly people, after a resident reported drunk people vandalizing street lamps and other facilities and posing a threat to public security.
A policeman fired a warning shot while besieged by the knife-wielding troublemakers who had refused to surrender and had began to chase one of the police officers.
Luo, 42, a laid-off worker, was watching the commotion from the fifth floor of a nearby building. He was shot in his right eye and died in hospital Sunday morning.
An investigation by the county-level public security bureau decided the policeman had fired the shot in an emergency situation and in line with regulations.
