Family makes justice demand
THE family of a woman killed by an excavator while attempting to stop a river conservancy project is demanding the driver and project supervisor be legally punished, although Zhengyang County government in Henan Province said it was an accident.
Li Li, a 38-year-old laid-off worker, was crushed under an excavator near her house on Monday. Zhengyang authorities said Li slipped in the mud and into the path of the excavator, but Li's husband accused the project officials of carrying out the work recklessly, Shandong Business Daily reported yesterday.
The family held a banner which said "Justice must be done! Murderer must be punished!" at a funeral home. They told reporters yesterday that they had been there four days, waiting for an explanation for the death.
Li's husband, Li Simao, said the government offered 600,000 yuan (US$90,500) in compensation, but his request for criminal charges against the excavator driver and a project supervisor was not answered by officials.
Li's daughter, 19, said the government lied in a statement that paramedics were stopped by residents from saving her mother. She said assistance came after half an hour and the workers continued construction while her mother lay in mud, the newspaper said.
Min Huaimin, director of Zhengyang County Water Conservancy Bureau, was removed from his job after the incident. Min is also the manager of the project contractor, Zhengyang County Hydraulic Engineering.
Some residents said they heard Min shouting "One death is far from enough!" after Li died. But Min -denies the claims.
