Family of boy bashed to death compensated
THE family of a boy who was beaten to death in an Internet addiction rehabilitation center in south China's Nanning City has been paid compensation of 1 million yuan (US$146,374), the boy's uncle said yesterday.
The Qihang Salvation Training Camp in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, where the boy was beaten, paid 500,000 yuan, co-owner Guangxi Electronics Technology School paid 400,000 yuan and a local media organization that promoted the camp paid the remainder, said Li Jian, the uncle of the deceased Deng Senshan, 15.
Deng's mother, Zhou Juan, is still hospitalized three weeks after his death and has been put on a drip feed.
Deng, a native of Ziyuan County in Guangxi, was found dead on August 2, about 10 hours after he arrived for rehabilitation at the camp in Nanning.
An autopsy by the city's public security bureau showed Deng suffered extensive injuries. Police have detained 13 people suspected of inflicting the injuries and of illegally operating the camp.
The camp was closed on August 7. About 120 addicts undergoing rehabilitation, all aged under 18, were taken home by their parents.
The death has triggered outrage on the Internet in China and drawn worldwide attention. Chinese medical experts have called for specific laws and regulations relating to diagnosis and treatment of so-called Internet addiction.
The number of treatment institutions and rehab camps addressing the problem in China's big cities has soared during the past few years as many parents are worried about their children's excessive use of the Internet.
