Family of custody victim seeks truth
THE family of a woman who died in a police station in north China's Shaanxi Province is seeking "the real cause of her death" after police said she succumbed to a heart attack after becoming overexcited during questioning.
The victim, Wang Huixia, died less than 20 hours after she was taken into custody for questioning over a theft case last December.
Police in Fuping County of the province said they were gentle with Wang in the interrogation because she was a woman and was only suspected of helping selling the stolen goods, China Youth Daily reported yesterday.
They claimed Wang said she felt dizzy and collapsed. She was taken to hospital but did not regain consciousness.
Wang's family does not believe the police explanation.
Wang's sister in law, Li Xia, said there were suspicious bruises on her corpse, noted by the autopsy doctor.
