Family of mother who died to take legal action

THE family of a woman who died just hours after giving birth are to pursue legal action against a maternity hospital in central China’s Hunan Province, officials with Xiangtan County’s health bureau said yesterday.

Qi Xianqiang, the bureau’s deputy director, said the family had agreed to an autopsy to determine the cause of death, the Legal Evening News reported.

A time for the autopsy has not yet been set, Qi said, but it will be carried out by a third-party organization in Xiangtan.

The woman’s body was moved from the hospital on Wednesday, the medical website Dingxiangyuan reported, but didn’t say where to.

No agreement has been reached on compensation after several rounds of negotiations, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

The family of the woman surnamed Zhang, had demanded 1.2 million yuan (US$195,000) at first and then reduced it to 980,000 yuan later. The hospital offered 560,000 yuan.

Zhang was admitted to the hospital on Sunday morning and diagnosed with premature rupture of the amniotic sac and fetal macrosomia — a term used to describe a much larger than average baby, the county health bureau said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

A baby boy was born at noon by cesarean section but Zhang began vomiting and her body went into spasm. Despite doctors’ efforts, she died from multiple organ failure caused by amniotic fluid embolism, a potentially fatal condition in which amniotic fluid enters the mother’s bloodstream, the statement said.

Zhang’s family accused the hospital of failing to save her life and of failing to inform them of the operation process and her death in time, while the hospital insisted its staff had tried their best.

It criticized family members for attacking doctors and damaging facilities after they were told of Zhang’s death.
