Family of prison suicide get redress
THE family of a whistleblower, who died in a prison hospital after being set up by an official in east China's Anhui Province, have received 880,000 yuan (US$134,020) compensation from the authorities.
Li Guofu hanged himself in the hospital in Fuyang City No. 1 Prison in Anhui Province in March 2008 after he was arrested by Yingquan District prosecutors.
Li was being treated for diabetes and blindness in the hospital, China Youth Daily reported yesterday.
Li was framed by Zhang Zhi'an, former Party secretary of Yingquan District and Li's supervisor, after Li revealed Zhang Zhi'an was using farmland to build an office building in the style of the White House.
The "White House" and its interior design were reported to have cost Yingquan 30 million yuan - even though the annual financial income of the district is no more than 100 million yuan.
Anhui's disciplinary watchdog and provincial People's Procuratorate launched a joint investigation into Zhang Zhi'an after Li's death was reported in the media. It was discovered that Zhang Zhi'an had faked letters that pointed to Li having taken bribes, which led to his imprisonment.
Li was charged with accepting bribes and arrested in August 2007. Li's wife Yuan Aiping and son-in-law Zhang Junhao were also incriminated for helping Li destroy evidence. Zhang Junhao was sentenced to one-and-a-half years in prison for providing shelter to Li.
Zhang Junhao was later set free with a verdict of not guilty in April 2009.
Zhang Zhi'an was also found to have taken 3.59 million yuan in bribes. He was given a death sentence with a two-year suspension.
Li's family received the -compensation from Fuyang City People's Procuratorate, Yingquan District government, district Public Security Bureau and Fuyang's No. 1 Prison.
