Family of 'suicide bomber' seeks high compensation

THE family of a man who died with three others in a plotted office blast in a town in southwestern Yunnan Province asked for big compensation as local police mistook him as the suicide bomber and damaged his reputation.

Zhao Dengyong, 26, was paid 100 yuan (US$15.72) by two villagers to take a bag to the demolition office of Baihetan Town government on May 10. He didn't know he was carrying a home-made bomb which was detonated by the two villagers through a mobile phone.

Police published Zhao's diary and online chat logs to prove that Zhao hated society and was a suicide bomber. Later investigations showed that Zhao was innocent and was a victim himself.

His family rejected an offer of 60,000 yuan in compensation from the police and was demanding a lump sum of 1 million yuan.

Zhao's wife, Zeng Jianhua, demanded the two villagers to knee down and bow to the picture of her husband. She also asked the local police chief, Yang Chaobang, to make a public apology for defaming her husband.

Deng Deyong and Song Chaoyu, who plotted the deadly blast, have been arrested and admitted to their crime.
