Family queries death in custody
THE family of a prisoner who died in custody in Yunnan Province has questioned the cause of death, said to be a sudden stroke.
Liu Chonglin, 47, was sent to hospital with acute cerebral bleeding and certified dead on March 6, an official from Chuxiong prison told Xinhua news agency today. An autopsy said he died of a sudden stroke.
His daughter visited his body two days later and said she saw signs of bruises around his neck and shoulders.
However, the prison administration said that it could provide video and photos to verify the cause of death. A spate of suspicious deaths in custody has raised questions over China's detention centers.
Liu was jailed in 2008 for three years for driving a car that killed two people in an accident. He had a history of high blood pressure, authorities said.
