Family queries death verdict
FAMILIY members of a 79-year-old woman, who died at her home, said local police in the central Hunan Province are trying to conceal the real cause of death after they claimed she committed suicide and took her body, but did not perform an autopsy.
The woman's daughter Xiong Zhiying was shocked when seeing her mother Li Lianzhi hanging from a rope in Taoyuan County last Friday.
Xiong said her mother's death was sudden and suspicious as drinks and food had been laid on the table, showing the home owner was just about to have dinner, reported China News Service yesterday.
Xiong said her mother had a grudge against Taoyuan County's Party Secretary Zheng Dixiang and was in conflict with him, which could have a connection with her death, she claimed.
Nearly 20 police officers arrived to investigate after Xiong called them. A senior officer said Li took her own life, which Xiong didn't accept.
When Xiong said she wanted an autopsy to be done on Li's body by higher-level police, as she didn't trust the county police, she claims the policemen then took the corpse and beat Xiong and other family members.
The policemen took the body away, leaving the family angry when holding a funeral without a body two days later. They became more convinced Li didn't kill herself after Li's friend Luo Guizhen, 60, said Li was in a good mood when they met earlier that day.
Xiong told reporters Li had complained to her that she was being monitored by police. Xiong said Li had a grudge against Zheng as her son was in economic dispute with Zheng. Her son is now on the county police's wanted list.
