Family queries son's death in detention

THE family of a 28-year-old man wants to know how he died in a detention house in north China's Henan Province after challenging the police explanation of a heart attack.

They said they wanted to photograph bruises on the man's body but police confiscated their mobile phone cameras, which increased their suspicion over the death, today's Henan Business Daily newspaper reported today.

Wang Shouchang, a villager from Luohe City's Lingying County, was caught by police in Shangqiu City's Tuocheng County on March 29 for alleged robbery. He was later put in the Tuocheng Detention House, Wang's mother told the newspaper.

Last Sunday, detention officers collected Wang's family and told them their son had died the day before, apparently of a heart attack.

The family said they refused a police plan for forensic experts to perform an autopsy on Wang, suggesting experts outside the county conduct the examination.

But Tuocheng police said they would carry out the autopsy today whether the family agreed or not, the family said.

Vice director of Tuocheng People's Court Guo Lianwen yesterday told the newspaper that the county had set up a special work group to investigate Wang's death. The research concluded Wang died after a heart attack and excluded possible bullying by other inmates.

Guo said it's the family's right to invite forensic experts from outside the county to witness the autopsy but they are not allowed to participate.

He added it is the state rule to perform an autopsy within 24 hours of an inmate's death in detention.
