Family queries son's 'suicide' by strangling

THE family of a man whom police said had strangled himself to death is questioning the explanation, saying he was under the supervision of four government workers at the time in northeastern Hebei Province.

Wang Bing, a villager from Chunguang Town in Zhangjiakou City, was found dead on March 8 with a shoelace around his neck tied to the door lock in a hostel room, his parents were told by police.

He was left alone in the hostel as his parents were in Beijing to lodge complaints against the local government which had allegedly forcefully bulldozed their home, his parents told today's China Youth Daily.

The family said they lived in the hostel under the supervision of four government workers, who monitored them 24 hours a day, they told the newspaper.

Requests for forensic reports had been denied by local police and government, they said.

Xuanwu police's vice director surnamed Zhao told China Youth Daily that it is not the police's obligation to disclose such reports.

Yang Lei, Party secretary of Chunguang Town, declined to comment.
