Family questions detainee's death
THE family of a 28-year-old man wants to know how he died in a detention house in central China's Henan Province, challenging the police explanation of a heart attack.
They said they found bruises on the man's body and wanted to photograph them with mobile phones but were interrupted by police and their handsets were confiscated - increasing their suspicions over the death, yesterday's Henan Business Daily newspaper reported.
Wang Shouchang, a villager of Linying County, was caught by police in Tuocheng County on March 29 for alleged robbery.
He was later put in the Tuocheng Detention House, Wang's mother told the newspaper.
Last Sunday, the detention house officers took Wang's family to Tuocheng and told them Wang died a day before, apparently from a heart attack.
The family saw Wang's body at a funeral home and detected bruises on his body. They took out mobile phones to take pictures but were stopped by more than 40 officers who stormed in and took away the handsets.
Autopsy dispute
Then they discovered they were followed by police.
The family said they refused the police's proposal to autopsy Wang with local forensic experts, suggesting experts from outside the county conduct the examination.
But Tuocheng police said they would perform the autopsy whether the family agrees or not, the family said.
Vice director of Tuocheng People's Court Guo Lianwen told the newspaper on Tuesday that the county had set up a special work group to investigate Wang's death.
The research concluded Wang died after a heart attack and excluded possible bullying by other inmates.
Guo said the police have sealed Wang's medical record, even from the family.
He said it is the family's right to invite forensic experts from outside the county to witness the autopsy but they are not allowed to participate in the examination.
He added it is the state rule to apply the forensic research within 24 hours of an inmate's death at a detention house.
If the conclusion is death from illness, the detention house will be exempt from any compensation, he said.
