Family rejects anesthesic for Cesarean birth

THE family of a 36-year-old pregnant woman refused to sign an anesthesia consent form, fearing it would harm the mother's health and the baby's intelligence, a Guangdong Province newspaper reported today.
The woman, surnamed Liu, was diagnosed with pregnancy-induced hypertension. Due to the high risks, doctors in a Dongguan City hospital decided to perform a Cesarean section for her delivery.
When they asked her family to sign the consent form, both her mother and mother-in-law demanded a surgery without anesthetia because they feared the anesthetic would do harm to Liu's fertility and the baby's intelligence. Only after a lengthy explanation, they agreed to sign the form.
Quan Shoubo, an expert on anesthesia, said general anesthesia has no side effect on human health if used correctly, the Nanfang Daily reported.
