Family rejects police compensation for inmate's death

AN inmate died after doing 51 push-ups in a detention house in Taishan, a city in southern Guangdong Province.

Li Yaping, a 42-year-old man with a history of high blood pressure, was doing the push-up exercise after washing clothes when he suddenly fell face down on the floor and failed to be revived in the hospital, according to a video footage provided by the police.

Taishan police have decided to compensate Li's family with 30,000 yuan (US$4,764) to 50,000 yuan, but his family rejected the offer and questioned the cause of his death on February 21, Guangzhou Daily reported today.

Li's family argued that it was unusual for him to do exercises in the laundry room and the detention house didn't provide him with medicine, which caused his death.

Li, a native of Hubei Province, had been detained for seven months for forging the government documents before his death, the report said.
