Family seeks redress after mistake by police

THE family of a man who died with three others in a plotted office explosion in Yunnan Province has asked for 1 million yuan (US$157,246) in compensation because local police mistakenly said he was a suicide bomber and damaged his reputation.

Zhao Dengyong, 26, was unaware he was carrying a home-made bomb in a backpack when he was paid 100 yuan (US$15.72) by two men to enter the demolition office of Baihetan Town government on May 10.

The two men used a mobile phone to detonate the bomb, police said.

Police published Zhao's diary and online chat logs to prove he hated society and concluded he was a suicide bomber. Later investigations showed Zhao was innocent.

His family rejected an offer of 60,000 yuan in compensation from the police and demanded a lump sum of 1 million yuan, The Beijing News reported yesterday.

Zhao's wife, Zeng Jianhua, demanded the two men who plotted the explosion kneel down and bow to the picture of her husband and suffer the same pain.

Police apologized last week.

"We apologize to the public, Zhao Dengyong and his family for the inaccurate and misleading information we earlier released," police said.

Deng Deyong and Song Chaoyu are suspected of plotting the deadly blast and have been arrested.

They have admitted to their crime, according to police.
