Family sends ailing newborn to die in hospice
NETIZENS have urged a father not to stop medical treatment for his seriously deformed daughter, paving the way for her to die in a terminal care hospital ward in north China.
The father sent his newborn daughter to a terminal care hospital in Tianjin Municipality after a family discussion when she was born with complex congenital deformities, today's Guangzhou Daily reported.
The girl's story was posted on the Tianya.cn Website two days ago, attracting more than 100,000 comments, some praising the father's decision but other urging him to fight for her survival.
More than a dozen members of a hastily assembled "Love Mother League" have gathered at the hospital to protest.
The hospital told Guangzhou Daily that it will respect the parents' decision and refused to provide further details.
Halting medical treatment does not constitute abuse or abandonment as defined in the country's laws, said lawyer Zhu Lieyu with Guangzhou's Guoding Law Office.
Meanwhile, in Gaochun County of east China's Jiangsu Province, a female farmer has drained all her savings to save her adoptive daughter who has leukemia, today's Yangtse Evening News reported.
