Family sentenced for infanticide because of baby's cleft lip
A family of seven in eastern Zhejiang Province received suspended prison sentences for drowning their baby girl because she was born with a cleft lip, China News Service reported yesterday.
The girl was born in a hospital in Shangyu City on August 30, 2011. The doctors told the family to take the baby to a better hospital to cure her cleft lip.
But the baby's grandmother surnamed Luo decided to give up the treatment and throw the baby into a river to "end all the troubles."
That night, Luo and six other family members, including the baby's father surnamed Chen, went to a local bridge and threw the baby into the water. However, the baby's body was found the next morning and police soon detained all the seven family members.
Luo and Chen were sentenced to three years in jail with a four-year reprieve. Other five members were sentenced to one year with a two-year reprieve, the Shangyu People's Court ruled.
