Family urges probe into suspect's death

A FAMILY in Beijing is demanding an investigation into the death of a suspect who died from complications after a 49-day fast at a detention house.

Qi Changjiang, 30, of Anhui Province, died of "heart arrest due to a 49-day fast" according to his death certificate, Beijing Times reported today.

He was arrested on July 26 on a charge of selling fake invoices. Qi went on hunger strike and refused to talk to officers after he was taken to Beijing's Haidian District Detention Center, police said.

But Qi's wife Zhu Haifen became suspicious about his death, saying he weighed 89 kilograms and was perfectly healthy before being taken into custody. She accused guards of maltreatment.

The district's police said they tried to make Qi eat, and the detention center's clinic used glucose injections and nasal feeding tubes despite Qi's refusal to cooperate, according to the report.

Qi died after vomiting blood and fell into a coma on September 17.
