Family's torment as student murdered in Sweden
SHANGHAI student Chen Hao was preparing to graduate from Sweden's Orebro University in June, and her parents had been looking forward to attending the ceremony. But now they will travel to the Scandinavia country under heartbreaking circumstances: to bring home their daughter's body.
Chen's parents had their world shattered at 1am last Friday, when they received a call from Sweden breaking the news their 25-year-old daughter had been stabbed to death by a classmate, referred to as Xiao Jun (not his real name) while walking to a supermarket the previous afternoon.
Xiao Jun comes from Shanghai. Friends speculate that long-term unrequited love is the only possible motive for the murder.
Ji Huafang, Chen's mother, was ill in bed yesterday. She had not eaten and barely slept in the past four days. Chen's father, Chen Kouxi, looked exhausted and much older than he had four days earlier.
The living room of Chen's home on Xizang Road S. has been turned into a mourning hall. Relatives and friends gathered and comforted Ji, who it is reported was suicidal after learning of her daughter's death.
They said they want to get to Sweden as soon as possible to bring their daughter home.
Chen Hao, who was born in 1986, was studying in Sweden for a masters degree after graduating from Shanghai Lixin University of Commerce's School of Mathematics and Information in 2009.
Friends describe her as sweet-natured, confident, capable, self-disciplined and open-minded.
She joined the Chinese Communist Party at the age of 19 and won academic prizes every term in Shanghai. Upon graduation from Lixin University, Chen received Shanghai's Excellent Graduate award, a great honor for young students.
Before her death, Chen had spent an hour online, chatting with her mother - a routine, together with sending a message every day, she'd kept to since moving to Sweden.
But shortly afterwards, Chen was dead in hospital, having been stabbed more than 10 times by Xiao Jun.
Xiao Jun, also a graduate from Shanghai Lixin University of Commerce before going to Orebro University, was said to have told Chen of his feelings for her five years ago. But Chen was not interested in a relationship with him.
Earlier this year, Xiao Jun told his former tutor in the Shanghai university that he still adored Chen and showed signs of depression.
Xiao Jun's friends say he was a good person who no one would have suspected would become a killer.
He has been arrested by police in Sweden and admitted the crime. He will be tried in Sweden, where there is no death penalty.
Police said about 10 witnesses will attend court hearings and that the trial is likely to last around two months.
