Famous microblogger caught in a sex scandal
A CHINESE-AMERICAN startup investor and prolific microblogger was detained after he was caught with a prostitute, Beijing police said yesterday.
Police said the 60-year-old man surnamed Xue was caught on Friday after they received a tip he was paying for sex with a 22-year-old prostitute in a residential community in the capital’s Chaoyang District.
Both Xue and the prostitute have confessed, according to police.
Major Beijing-based media, including The Beijing News and China National Radio, citing police, identified Xue as Xue Biqun, better known by his online name Xue Manzi.
People hiring prostitutes can be detained for up to five days and fined 500 yuan (US$81.70).
A severe offender will be placed in custody for 15 days and fined 5,000 yuan.
As an American citizen, Xue can also be deported, law professor Hong Daode told China National Radio.
Pubic reports showed Xue is the co-founder of telecom firm UT Starcom.
He also invested in other Chinese Internet startup firms, including PCPOP.com, an online electronic trading platform, and Creaty China, an Internet marketing company.
He has more than 12 million followers on Weibo.
