Farmer abandons premature triplet girls due to poverty
A 55-year-old man turned himself in to police in east China after he allegedly paid a hospital cleaner to dump his newborn triplet granddaughters because he "believed they were already dead."
The farmer surnamed Hu told police that the premature babies were in a critical condition after birth last November and doctors of the hospital in Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province, said the family needed to pay 180,000 yuan (US$27,305) for two months of neonatal intensive care to keep them alive, which he couldn't afford, the local news website, Jxnews.com, reported today.
The girls soon stopped crying and turned cold, which made him believe they already died, Hu said. He then paid a hospital cleaner 360 yuan to dispose of the "corpses" while the girls' parents were resting in the ward. The parents said they thought the girls were being treated somewhere.
Police said they were still investigating the cleaner who allegedly threw the triplet to a garbage dump. A garbage-picker heard the babies' crying and sent them to the hospital.
Hu surrendered to police on November 5 last year. The girls were in stable conditions in hospital.
