Farmer burns to death

OFFICIALS at the scene did nothing to prevent a farmer from burning himself and his 92-year-old father to death in protest against relocation in east China's Jiangsu Province, according to victims' family.

Tao Huixi set himself and his father Tao Xingyao alight after a demolition crew moved in on his house in Donghai County's Huangchuan Town, Sunday's Beijing News reported.

Huangchuan Town head Zhou Wenjun admitted being at the scene but said he and his subordinates tried to rescue them immediately. The father, Tao Xingyao, survived the fire.

He said the town government had negotiated with 68-year-old Tao Huixi for more than nine months over the relocation for the construction of the State Highway 310 before starting demolition on Saturday.

"They lit up in two minutes when we were holding a talk," Zhou said.

Tao's family denied officials tried to help.

"Absolutely not!" said Tao Huixiang, Tao Huixi's brother. "What they said was not trustworthy."

Another brother, Tao Qiuyu, said there was no medical staff among the nearly 100 officials and police officers at the scene, and no rescue efforts were made.

Tao's family had yet been informed of the whereabouts of Tao Huixi's corpse.
