Farmer compensated for 11 years of wrong jail
THE Higher People's Court of Henan Province today gave 650,000 yuan (US$95,168) in compensation to a farmer who was tortured into confession of a murder and had been jailed for 11 years until his alleged victim reappeared alive this month.
It was far less than the 1 million yuan compensation Zhao Zuohai expected, but he said it was fine and the 57-year old farmer said he will take whatever the authority would grant, China News Service reported.
Apart from the compensation, the Laowangji township government will build a new house for Zhao. He said he wanted to be reunited with his adopted kids.
Zhao Zuohai was tortured into confession that he killed his fellow villager Zhao Zhenshang. He said the police beat him up for more than a month and taught him sentence by sentence what he would tell the court in trial.
Zhao Zuohai was sent to death with two years of reprieve. His sentence was later converted into 29 years of jail thanks to his "good performance in prison." But Zhao Zhenshang, believed to be dead for 11 years, turned up alive this month.
During his jail time, Zhao Zuohai's wife remarried and gave up three of their four kids to adoption. Their house, one of the most beautiful in the village 11 years ago, collapsed. Zhao Zuohai said even his remaining son hated him, thinking he was a murderer.
Prosecutors in Henan Province have detained two police officers for allegedly torturing Zhao Zuohai into confession.
Three officers, Guo Shouhai, Zhou Minhan and Li Deling, participated in the torturing in 1999. Guo and Zhou had been detained while Li was still at large, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
