Farmer dies in protest

A FARMER died and his father was injured after they set themselves on fire to prevent their pig farm from being demolished in Jiangsu Province, authorities confirmed yesterday.

Tao Huixi's pig farm and the houses of five other fellow villagers were due to be torn down to make way for a highway in Huangchuan Township, Donghai County, a spokesman with the county government said.

The houses of five other villagers had been demolished before the highway project started in the second half of 2009, but Tao had refused to accept compensation of about 75,000 yuan (US$11,000) offered by the township government, the spokesman said.

Tao's family said the compensation was too low and that they would not move. Tao and the township government officials had failed to reach an aagreement after repeated negotiations, the spokesman said.

Tao and his 92-year-old father locked themselves in their house and set themselves on fire when township government workers went there for a forced demolition on Saturday, the spokesman said.

Government workers subsequently broke into the house to pull them out, but Tao died and his father was injured, he said.

Tao's father is in hospital, and the county government has set up a team to handle the incident, the spokesman added.
