Farmer fires cannon to defend home from demolition
A PEASANT threatened with demolition has turned his home into a military fortress armed with homemade cannons, a watchdog and road barriers topped with a lookout in central China.
Yang Youde, 56, launched his fight to protect his 1.67-hectare vegetable farm in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, where developers wanted to start a project in February, reported Changjiang Times today.
Before an agreement on compensation was reached, the developers hired a team of some 30 security guards to tear down Yang's house on February 26, which spurred him to defend his home.
He first built a "cannon cart" using huge firecrackers on a trolley. He fired the cannon at the guards, who waited until he'd used all his ammunition – and then beat him up, the report said.
Yang decided to convert his home into a total military stronghold.
He kept a watchdog that would bark loudly at strangers, and set up road barriers armed with firecrackers to scare off invaders.
On top of his house, he built an eight-meter watchtower, which he could reach by ladder to survey his "battlefield."
He defended his stronghold last month, when Yang fired his cannon to stop more than 100 security guards armed with helmets and shields driving tractors.
Police arrived later to stop confrontation between the two sides.
