Farmer gets death sentence after killing 8

A FARMER in east China's Jiangxi Province has been sentenced to death for killing eight people, including his mother, wife and daughter.

Ji'an City Intermediate People's Court handed down its verdict and convicted Zhou Yezhong of murder, China News Service reported today.

The court said Zhou, 36, a farmer in Ji'an's Jishui County, had tense relations with his wife over his long-time gambling.

On the evening of May 8, Zhou again had a quarrel with his wife. After she left the house, he killed his 10-year-old daughter Zhou Xiaomin with a knife and then stabbed his 80-year-old mother dead, despite her kneeling to beg him to spare her.

He later stormed into his neighbor's home and killed his wife Kang Qiuying, 36, the neighor Hu Dongsheng and Hu's mother Wu Xiu, 83.

Villagers Ye Wen'e and Zhou Nianmei saw the stabbing spree and tried to call police, but were also killed by Zhou.

Zhou also killed Zuo Huasheng, a migrant worker.

Police caught the killer two hours later during his escape attempt.

According to village officials, the Zhous had lived a poor life. A five-year-old son survived the slaughter.

Last November, Beijinger Li Lei murdered six of his family members out of "accumulated resentment" against his wife and parents.

The victims, including two children, were three generations of the same family, and all died from knife wounds.

He was caught at south China's Hainan Island.
