Farmer gets multi-million yuan fine, jail for selling fake sweaters online
A FARMER was sentenced to five years in prison and charged a fine of 21.51 million yuan (US$3.38 million) by an Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region court for selling counterfeit famous brand sweaters on the Internet, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.
Li Qing, a local of central China's Hunan Province, said the fine was too high because his total sales income was about 60,000 yuan and he only earned about 10,000 yuan in profits, the report said.
Ordos Intermediate People's Court said Li started selling sweaters of counterfeit brands he bought from Zhejiang Province, including Erdos, a famous brand of Inner Mongolia, and Hengyuanxiang, a top domestic brand since August 2010.
Inner Mongolia police captured Li four months later, and the police seized altogether 26,187 sweaters with a total marked price of more than 43 million yuan. This amount was assumed to be the total value of Li's illegal business and the fine was charged accordingly, the court said.
However, Wang Fukui, Li's lawyer, told the court that the real prices of the sweaters were between 100 yuan and 150 yuan, and Li had only sold over 400 sweaters with a total income of around 60,000 yuan in the four months. But this claim was not supported by the court.
Li had already appealed to the Inner Mongolia Supreme People's Court, the report said.
