Farmer held over panda's poisoning

POLICE in east China's Shandong Province have detained a man on suspicion of causing the sudden death of a giant panda which inhaled poisonous gas in a zoo.

The panda named Quanquan in Jinan City Zoo was killed last Thursday after inhaling poisonous gas from a nearby mushroom farm owned by the suspect surnamed Yang, Xinhua news agency reported today.

Yang's mushroom farm was built in a former air-raid shelter. He ordered his workers to disinfect the shelter but the cleanser they used gave out a poisonous gas. The gas reached Quanquan's cage through the shelter's venting system and killed it.

The regulators of the air-raid shelter said they had no idea that Yang had rented it for a mushroom farm, the report said.

It is still unknown why the vent pipe in the shelter linked to the panda's cage. An official with the regulator of air-raid shelters showed a construction drawing that showed the nearest air pipe should be 70 meters away from the panda cage, the report said.
